Electrical worker licence renewal

You can renew your electrical work licence within two months of the expiry date.

You can also reinstate an expired electrical work licence within 12 months of it having expired. Your reinstated licence will be issued with an expiry date five years from the original expiry date.

Before you begin

Before you begin the renewal process you need to ensure you have completed:

  • your skills maintenance using the free Skills maintenance online assessment within two years of your renewal
  • CPR refresher training within twelve months of your renewal
  • for electrical lines person licence holders, pole-top or transmission tower rescue training (PTR) within twelve months of your renewal.

You are not required to provide copies of your CPR or PTR certificates or skills maintenance certificate when you renew but you may be required to provide it later for auditing purposes.

Once you are ready to proceed, you will need your renewal notification letter. This letter would have been sent to your last advised postal address. You need the identifying numbers printed on the letter to complete your renewal. If you have not received your letter please call 1300 362 128.

Licences expired longer than twelve months

If your electrical work licence is expired longer than 12 months you need to apply for a new licence. Go to Other licence application types You will be issued a new licence number.

Electrical worker licence recognition - applying for a new licence if expired for more than 12 months

You may be eligible for an electrical work licence if any of the following apply:

  • you previously held a Queensland electrical work licence that expired over 12 months ago*
  • you completed an apprenticeship in Queensland more than three years ago
  • you hold:
    • a current Queensland electrical work licence and wish to apply for an additional class on that licence
    • an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR)
    • a tradesperson’s certificate
    • a certificate of proficiency
    • a certificate or qualification obtained through an apprenticeship completed outside of Queensland.

You need to complete the Form 11 - Application for electrical work licence/permit (PDF, 131.32 KB). An application fee applies.

You will need to provide the following information:

  • details of any previous work licence history
  • your current contact details.

If you have not previously held a Queensland electrical work licence or permit you will need to provide copies of identity documents as per Table 1 on the application form.

You will also need to confirm that you have been trained in resuscitation (CPR) within the last twelve months.

You are not required to supply a copy of your CPR certificate with your application but may be required to provide it later for auditing purposes.

If you are applying for an electrical linesperson licence you will also need to confirm that you have been trained in pole-top or transmission tower rescue (PTR) within the last twelve months. You are not required to supply a copy of your PTR certificate with your application but may be required to provide it later for auditing purposes.

You must submit a full and complete application. Incomplete or incorrect applications may result in delays in obtaining your licence or may be considered withdrawn. Some of your application fee may be retained to offset administrative costs.

You can lodge your application by email or mail. Lodgement details are provided on the application form.

Some applicants may need to undertake additional training and may be issued with a twelve month electrical work training permit. Electrical work training permits are issued to allow licence applicants to complete additional training with a registered training organisation (RTO) to obtain their electrical work licence.

Electrical contractor licences

You can renew your current electrical contractor licence within two months of the expiry date.

You can also reinstate an expired electrical contractor licence within 12 months of it having expired.

PLEASE NOTE: Your reinstated licence will be issued with an expiry date twelve months from the original expiry date.

You cannot renew or reinstate your electrical contractor licence if:

  • it has been expired for more than one year
  • you have changed the legal entity structure of your business (e.g. changed from a sole trader to a company)
  • your ACN has changed because you’ve established a new company
  • your contractor licence was cancelled.

Before you begin

Before you begin the renewal process ensure:

  • your insurance policy is current and meets the requirements of s.51 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013
  • your qualified technical person (QTP) and qualified business person (QBP) are still eligible to be nominated for the licence (e.g. Are they still employed by the business?).

  • your QTP’s electrical work licence is current
  • that any ASIC company or business registrations are current.
